SEASON’S GREETINGS AND SAA HOLIDAY HOURS

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff at the Saskatchewan Arts Alliance, we wish you a happy holiday season and much success in the New Year! The office will be closed from December 24th to January 2nd, 2013.

CALL TO ACTION: SPEAK WITH YOUR MLA ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ARTS

The holiday season is here and MLAs are back in their home ridings. This is your chance to meet with your MLA to talk about the importance of the arts to you, your family, and to the quality of life in your province. This year, the Saskatchewan Arts Alliance is focusing on two points and requests for MLAs, for the government to increase its investment in the arts sector and to ensure that arts education is a priority.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT GRANTS PROGRAM

The 2014 Community Investment Grants Program (CIGP) has been posted on the City of Regina website. The CIGP provides funding to community non-profit organizations registered with the ISC Corporate Registry.

TALK TO YOUR MP VIA SOCIAL MEDIA

The Canadian Arts Coalition (CAC) submitted a brief to the Standing Committee on Finance with three proposed recommendations. The SAA has written to all Saskatchewan Members of Parliament in support of these recommendations. We encourage you to do the same. For more information about how you can interact with your MP on social media or in face-to-face meetings, visit the Canadian Arts Coalition’s website.

ANALYSES OF THE 2013-14 PROVINCIAL AND TERRITORIAL BUDGETS – ARTS, CULTURE AND HERITAGE

The latest analysis examining the impact of provincial and territorial Budgets on the cultural sector, Gloom and Glee – Analyses of the Provincial and Territorial 2013-2014 Budgets from the Perspective of Arts, Culture and Heritage has been released, and includes a section analyzing the impact of the Saskatchewan budget on the cultural sector.

CULTURE INCLUDED IN THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

There are several processes currently underway within the United Nations to set new global goals for aid and development – the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which drive the way governments worldwide and international agencies such as the World Bank spend billions of dollars every year on development initiatives. The MDGs also drive the way in which development is evaluated.

Many international agencies (both intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations) are joining forces to advocate for culture to be integrated into the MDGs and the global development agenda in the future. These agencies were successful in having the following wording added to the final declaration: “We recommend… that a specific Goal focused on culture be included as part of the post-2015 UN development agenda, to be based on heritage, diversity, creativity and the transmission of knowledge and including clear targets and indicators that relate culture to all dimensions of sustainable development.”  For further information, please visit IFACCA’s website.
