SAA WELCOMES NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND SAYS FAREWELL TO THREE

SAA is pleased to welcome Kelley Jo Burke, Chrystene Ells, Shelley Ewing, Bart Gazzola, and Yvette Nolan to the board of directors. We also say farewell and thank-you to Cynthia Dyck, and Amy Nelson Mile who both volunteered their time and their expertise to the SAA over the past many years.

SAA COMMUNITY FORUM AND PANEL DISCUSSION SPEAK UP: A CALL TO ACTION

On Saturday, September 21, the SAA hosted a community forum as part of their AGM programming. Concerns were brought forward about the U of S College of Education removing arts out of the curriculum, a problem exasperated by the funding cut suffered by the Saskatchewan Arts Education Collective.  One organization posed the question about funding discrepancies between similar arts organizations, while another person in attendance voiced that the province must be made aware that arts organizations provide a public service. More details to follow.

The SAA also presented Speak Up: A Call to Action featuring panelists Madeleine Blais-Dahlem, award-winning playwright and vice president of La Troupe du Jour; Charlie Clark, Saskatoon City Councillor of Ward 8; and Grant McConnell, visual artist and president of CARFAC National.

Moderated by Marcus Miller, panelists discussed their experiences and current campaigns with arts advocacy and shared tips on how to speak to policy makers. Examples of these tips include recruiting those in a different sector to advocate for your cause, to keep other points of view in mind when advocating, and to never underestimate the power of the administration staff of the policy maker

JUDITH SILVERTHORNE SPEAKS TO THE CHALLENGES FACING WRITERS IN THE PROVINCE

Check out the latest SAA Op-Ed article , Challenges Facing Saskatchewan Wrtiers featuring award winning writer Judith Silverthorne: More often than not, only a handful of family and friends appear for these events, whereas before the writing community as a whole would be present to cheer one another on. Somehow we’ve lost touch with the community spirit support, the solidarity that once prevailed in being there for the ‘team.’
