Prairie Partnership for Arts Research
SAA contributed as a partner organization to the Prairie Partnership for Arts Research (PPAR)’s application for a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Partnership Grant ($2.5M over 7 years). If successful, PPAR will expand the Arts Ecology Research begun by the Saskatchewan Partnership for Arts Research (SPAR) to all three Prairie Provinces. The PPAR application included nearly 80 researchers and 29 partner organizations.

Read this month’s Op-Ed by Saskatchewan based Music Producer Elias “Ellie” Lenge: “Music is a non-traditional form of employment, but it is a real profession. You will actually work harder than a 9-5 job. There are many disciplines needed if you’re serious about making a living, you can feed a family with music, but fame should not be your primary focus.” Read more here.
Two New Resources in SAA Library Available to Members
The SAA collects and maintains an extensive library of research studies, statistics, and reference books. Two new books are now available to members: Social Media for Academics by Mark Carrigan and Cultural Policy by David Bell and Kate Oakley. Analysis of the Federal Budget – Culture and Arts: a New Approach
The Canadian Conference of the Arts, the Canadian Arts Coalition and the Saskatchewan Arts Alliance are pleased to release the analysis of the 2016 Federal Budget which examines federal funding for the arts and culture sector for the 2016 – 2017 fiscal year. Read more here.
Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW) and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
The Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW) released “Mapping the Canadian Index of Wellbeing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: A Working Paper” by Bryan Smale and Margo Hilbrecht, University of Waterloo. The CIW has identified core domains of wellbeing and associated indicators to measure social impacts. These are directly related to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and targets as identified in the UN report, Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Though CIW is a Canadian model, the CIW group hopes that its framework could be applicable in other areas of the world.
Federation of Canadian Municipalities adopts Bogotá Agenda
Last month, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) met in Bogotá for its 5th UCLG World Congress. The Bogotá Commitment and Action Agenda: Local and Regional Governments Ensuring a Better Future for All was adopted by all members. One of the core beliefs expressed in the document is that “answers generated within urban settlements and territories will pave the way for global solutions.” The UCLG is committed to undertake its responsibility to improve conditions for a better future for all.
Cities and territories are called upon to promote active cultural policies that value, promote, integrate, and connect culture to governance, planning, and regional development strategies, for example.

CARFAC SASK Announces Recipient of the 2016 Patrick Close Leadership in the Arts Award
CARFAC SASK is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2016 Patrick Close Leadership in the Arts Award is Marsha Kennedy.
The Award will be presented on Saturday, November 19th, 2016 following CARFAC SASK’s Annual General Meeting. The award ceremony takes place at AKA Artist Run at 424 20th Street West in Saskatoon at 1:00 pm to celebrate. Light refreshments will be served.
Sask Filmpool Presents the 2016 Saskatchewan Independent Film Awards
The Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative is very pleased to present the 2016 Saskatchewan Independent Film Awards (SIFA). The event celebrates Saskatchewan’s best independent films and filmmakers, and showcases to the entire province our own filmmaking talents and unique Saskatchewan culture. SIFA is presented by the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative an organization dedicated to the production and exhibition of independent, visionary, Saskatchewan-made, film and video art. Now in its third year, the 2016 SIFA will be held November 24 at Regina’s Artesian Theatre.
