CREATIVE INDUSTRY CONSULTATIONS
On July 18th, the Government of Saskatchewan announced details of a consultation process for the Creative Industries. The intent of these consultations is to create a comprehensive strategy that advances the commercial aspect of the Creative Industries with plans to adopt emerging digital technologies.

The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport is leading the consultations with the support of the Ministry of Economy and the help of a Creative Industry Cabinet Committee consisting of MLAs Mark Doherty, Laura Ross, Jennifer Campeau and Darryl Hickie. This Committee was asked by the Premier to assist with the consultations and aid in gathering information.

A discussion paper with key questions can be found on their website. Those interested in participating in the discussion are asked to visit the website, read the discussion paper, and leave their feedback before September 15, 2012.

Using these online submissions as a springboard, the Ministry will host focus groups in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert in October. The focus group discussions will be evening meetings intended to build on the themes and feedback collected through the online discussions with the goal of building a strategy. The Creative Industry Cabinet Committee will be in attendance at these sessions. Focus group participants will be recruited from the on-line submissions, industry associations and various networks. As well, anyone engaged in commercial cultural product production and interested in participating in a focus group may contact Susan Hetu at susan.hetu@gov.sk.ca.

According to the news release, the consultations will explore concepts like pulling creative enterprises under a common umbrella, new uses for the production studios, a non-refundable tax credit and other ideas such as how to create a critical mass, how to collaborate and innovate using digital technology and how to partner and make sustainable investments in the future.

Minister Doherty believes that “these consultations will position the creative industries to be part of the province’s Growth Agenda which is important to strengthening our quality of life and building an even stronger Saskatchewan.”
