?Vital Conversations to be hosted in Weyburn and Shaunavon
The Saskatchewan Arts Alliance, in partnership with OSAC, is hosting Vital Community Conversations in WEYBURN and SHAUNAVON that will focus on the local and surrounding arts community including artists, arts administrators, arts educators, and those simply interested in the arts. The facilitated questions will pinpoint the community’s key needs/priorities, and critical issues.

What We’ve Been Reading…
While researching at the SAA, we discover a lot of interesting information and we like to share some of it with you:
- Impact of the Film Employment Tax Credit (FETC) on the Film and Video Industry of Saskatchewan: as it has been in the news recently, we are re-reading the study commissioned by Sask Film and the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce to determine the actual sector value and net cost to government of the Film Employment Tax Credit (FETC) cut in the 2012 Provincial Budget
- Livelihoods of Visual Artists: 2016 Data Report: Released December 2018 and funded by Arts Council England, in order to address important information and evidence gaps in relation to the visual arts. A large-scale national study of the livelihoods, careers and needs of visual artists in England had not been carried out in the previous decade, therefore this study aimed to refresh knowledge and understanding of visual artists in England.
?2019–20 Provincial Budget: The Right Balance
On Wednesday, March 20, the Honourable Donna Harpauer, Minister of Finance, delivered the 2019–20 Provincial Budget: The Right Balance. The Minister delivered a balanced budget with a projected surplus of $382 million. Overall projected expense for the year is $14.99 billion, an increase of 2.6% over last year’s budget. The budget areas related to arts and creative industries showed a decrease of almost 1.3%. The Community Initiatives Fund (which has the largest decrease) is forecasting lower profits based on gaming revenue. Read more here.
Federal Government Releases 2019 Budget
On March 19, the Government of Canada released its 2019 Federal Budget, which includes increases to the Canadian Arts Presentation Fund, the Canada Music Fund, and other critical funding sources for Canadian arts and culture. To view more about this, click here.
SaskCulture Board of Directors Nominations
SaskCulture is seeking talented, dynamic, conscientious and energetic individuals interested in volunteering to assist in the cultural development of Saskatchewan. The Nomination Committee will present a slate of candidates at the Annual General Meeting, which will take place Friday, June 14, 2019, at the Conexus Arts Centre. Applications received after the May 1st deadline will be treated as a nomination from the floor. For more information.
Attend the 26th Annual Saskatchewan Book Awards
Early bird and student tickets are now on sale for the 26th Saskatchewan Book Awards Ceremony, and they are selling fast. Tickets are $60 until the end of March. On March 31st, ticket prices go up to $75, while student prices remain at $30 until April 25th. Be sure to get your tickets early! Ticket sales end on April 25th.
Community Initiatives Fund Deadline Approaching
CIF’s April 1 deadline is quickly approaching! Annual Grants support programs and projects that enhance the healthy growth and development of children and youth, individual and community wellbeing, and/or nonprofit and community leadership. Programs may be offered continuously throughout the year, may be for a defined time period (e.g., an 8 week program), or may be short-term projects such as a one-day training session.
Grant Opportunity: Get Up To $25,000 in Musical Instruments for SK Community Organizations
Applications are now open for the 2019 MusiCounts TD Community Music Program! This program awards up to $25,000 in musical instruments and equipment to non-profit, youth-oriented community organizations across Canada. Last year alone, this program supported 30 programs across the country with $500,000 in new instruments and equipment. Community organizations can apply on behalf of an existing music program, or request instruments to help start up a new music program.
Applications are open until April 18, 2019. MusicCounts is hoping to see more applications from SK this year. To learn more about this program and for instructions on how to apply, please click here.
