SAA Consults with Saskatoon Artists
In September 2018, the City of Saskatoon contracted the Saskatchewan Arts Alliance to conduct consultations with Saskatoon artists regarding Saskatoon arts spaces. Via focus groups, interviews, meetings, and dialogues SAA consulted a sample of artists from a variety of disciplines and perspectives (including artists of various ages, career-stages, and backgrounds – including newcomer and indigenous voices). The Report was submitted to the city in December of 2018.
SAA Releases Research Report: the Effects of ArtSmarts on Former Students
SAA commissioned Dianne Warren to write The Lasting Effects of Artist-Teacher Partnerships on Former Students of Broadview School. In 2004, Broadview School began a six-year journey with ArtsSmarts Saskatchewan, a grant program that provided money for teachers to partner with professional artists in the classroom. This research aimed to discover whether the former students still think about the projects, and if so, how they think their participation might have affected their adult lives. Read it here.
The Saskatchewan Arts Board, in partnership with SaskCulture and the Ministry of Education, still offer the ArtsSmarts program now called Artists in Schools.
Things we’ve been Reading…
While researching at the SAA, we discover a lot of interesting information and we like to share some of it with you:
- Calgary Arts Development: in the fall of 2017, CAD conducted an Arts Professionals Survey to learn how art is made in Calgary, what the lifestyle patterns and living conditions are for those working in the arts, and how Calgary is perceived as a supporter of arts activity. The survey asked 58 questions related to individuals’ careers, finances, health and well-being, housing, spaces, and resources for artistic practice, perceptions and participation in community, as well as basic demographics. - Bachtrack brings you the year in statistics: the world of classical music as reflected by the 33,578 concerts, opera and dance performances in their database for 2018. Read the summary here.

Artist Talk by Adrian Stimson
Please join the Department of Art and Art History and the College Art Galleries in a celebration honouring Canadian interdisciplinary artist Adrian Stimson, a recipient of the 2018 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. The event will take place at 7 pm on Thursday, January 24 at the Gordon Snelgrove Art Gallery, U of S.
Stimson will discuss the evolution of his practice, highlighting key bodies of his work in performance, video, painting and installation. Central to Stimson’s practice are questions about identity construction, Two Spirit being, colonial genocide, cultural fragility, loss and resilience. Call to Visual Artists and Fine Craftspeople – Award Design
The Saskatchewan Arts Board (SAB) invites all emerging and established visual artists and craftspeople who are residents of Saskatchewan to submit proposals for the award design for the Saskatchewan Arts Awards. The deadline for submissions is February 4, 2019. For more information, visit the SAB website.
Call to Curators: City of Saskatoon Placemaker Program
This competition is open to all Canadian professional curators or curators living in Canada. The competition is held in accordance with the City of Saskatoon’s Public Art Policy (2016 C10-025).
The project will be managed by the City of Saskatoon’s Public Art Program in the Recreation and Community Development Department. Installation is expected to take place in the summer/fall of 2019. Curatorial Fee: $10,000 | Deadline for Submissions: 2:00 p.m. February 19, 2019. For more information, click here.
Province Seeks Public Input on Public Libraries
The Government of Saskatchewan is asking the public to participate in a survey on the future of public libraries in the province. Last year, the provincial government engaged with key stakeholders about the future of libraries in Saskatchewan which led to the Report of Saskatchewan Public Libraries Engagement. Now, a public survey is gathering information on the themes expressed in the report. The deadline to participate is Friday, January 25, 2019.
Community Initiatives Fund: 2019 Community Perspectives Survey
The CIF is once again conducting its Community Perspectives Survey. Your feedback will help the CIF evaluate their grant program and related processes, as well as their communications with the community. Please be assured that your responses are completely confidential and your anonymity is guaranteed. This survey should take less than 15 minutes to complete. Mobilizing Cultural Plans into Action – Mass Culture Digital Gathering #1
