SAA Partners with OSAC to host Vital Community Conversations
In partnership with the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils, the SAA is hosting two of the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation’s 50 Vital Community Conversations. We want to hear what matters to you and what is needed in your arts community. Feel free to bring friends or invite anyone who would be interested. The SAA will be in Weyburn on April 2 and Shaunavon on April 10. Stay tuned for more details!

What We’ve Been Up to Lately…
In the New Year, the SAA has been hard at work:
- we presented a historical overview of the SAA and discussed its current activity with the board of directors of the Saskatchewan Arts Board,
- we met with Susan Nedelkov-Anderson, Assistant Deputy Minister of Education, to discuss K-12 arts education and recent research,
- and we submitted recommendations to the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation’s initiative Re-Imagine Education.
What We’ve Been Reading…
While researching at the SAA, we discover a lot of interesting information and we like to share some of it with you:
- Government of Saskatchewan Special Project Credit Policy: guides students who are seeking credits for out-of-school initiatives. This can include in the arts areas.
- Artist Career Research Methods (Jan 2019): Canada Council for the Arts brings you a comparative analysis of research methods for understanding artists’ career paths, work conditions, and incomes.
- PUSH/PUSHBACK – – 9 Steps to make a difference with activism and art: includes? Has? stories from the front line of activism to formulate a step by step guide to the art of collaboration: how to huddle up, gather evidence, tap into your own expertise to generate ideas, use humor, be intersectional, fund projects, ensure response and guarantee momentum.
- Gender Parity in Canadian Artistic and Cultural Organizations: Report of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage. The House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage undertook a study on how to establish gender parity on the Boards of Canadian artistic and cultural organizations, as well as among Artistic Directors across Canada. The Committee heard from industry experts, academics and other experts to fully identify the problem, and to make recommendations that would lead to gender parity.
Good News – Saskatchewan Lottery License Agreement Renewed
Parks, Culture and Sport Minister announced a renewed lottery agreement, which guarantees that sport, culture and recreation organizations will continue to receive and benefit from Saskatchewan Lotteries. On January 30th, the five-year agreement was signed between the Government of Saskatchewan, Sask. Sport, SaskCulture and the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association. The new agreement will see the lottery license fees stay at 3.75 per cent of annual sale.
Call for Participation: Online Provincial Arts And Culture Calendar
Organizations in Saskatchewan are investigating the viability of launching an online calendar of arts and cultural activities in the province. Would such a calendar be useful? Would you use it? What features should be included in such an online calendar? Please take the time to answer these questions by filling out this survey. The survey is completely anonymous, and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. Deadline to participate is March 11.
Saskatchewan Book Awards Shortlist Announced
The shortlist for the 26th Saskatchewan Book Awards was announced on February 14th in Regina and Saskatoon. Congratulations to all of the shortlisted authors and publishers! Award winners will be announced at the 26th Saskatchewan Book Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina. RSO Annual Music Festival 2019
Regina Symphony Orchestra (RSO) recently announced its 2nd Annual Forward Currents Festival. Raising Hope: Music and Mental Health will be held at the mâmâwêyatitân centre from March 1 to 3. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit RSO’s website.
Minister Rodriguez Announces Appointment of New Director of National Gallery of Canada
The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, announced the appointment of Dr. Alexandra Suda as Director of the National Gallery of Canada. Dr. Suda, the fourth woman to assume this role, will serve a five-year term beginning April 19, 2019. For more information, click here.
CRA Draft Guidance on Charities’ Public Policy Work
The Canada Revenue Agency issued draft guidance explaining how the CRA will administer changes to the Income Tax Act which allow charities to carry on unlimited public policy dialogue and development activities to advance their stated charitable purpose. The publication of the guidance follows Parliament passing legislation that changes the rules governing charities’ political activities. These changes were included in Budget Implementation Act, 2018, No. 2, which received Royal Assent on December 13, 2018.
The CRA is accepting comments on the guidance document until April 23, 2019. All feedback received will be considered to inform the publication of a final version of the guidance.
Call for Applications – MacKenzie Art Gallery Board of Trustees
The MacKenzie Art Gallery is currently accepting applications from individuals interested in joining the volunteer Board of Trustees starting in 2019-20. Applicants should have an interest in advancing Regina’s arts community with preference to those applications demonstrating professional and/or volunteer experience in the areas of fundraising, accounting, government relations, leadership and advocacy. Call to Curators: Placemaker Program
This competition is open to all Canadian professional curators or curators living in Canada. The competition is held in accordance with the City of Saskatoon’s Public Art Policy (2016 C10-025).
The project will be managed by the City of Saskatoon’s Public Art Program in the Recreation and Community Development Department. Installation is expected to take place in the summer/fall of 2019. Curatorial Fee: $10,000 | Deadline for Submissions: 2:00 p.m. February 19, 2019. For more information, click here.
Call for Nominations: Sobey Art Award
Nominations for the 2019 Sobey Art Award are now open. The Sobey Art Award, Canada’s pre-eminent award for contemporary Canadian art, is an annual prize given to an artist aged 40 or under. All application materials must be received at the National Gallery of Canada at/or before 6 pm EST on Friday, March 1, 2019. For more information.
Call to Visual Arts and Fine Craft Organizations and Professionals
The deadline to apply for the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) Jean A. Chalmers Fund is March 1, 2019. This fund supports projects that contribute to an understanding of the fine crafts in Canada. Eligible individuals and organizations can apply for up to $7,000. Visit the CCA’s website for more information and guidelines.
