Take Time to Advocate this Holiday Season
During the holiday season many elected officials stay in their home ridings. Please include your MP and MLA in your social calendar. While bringing them season’s greetings, take the opportunity to share the good work you do and the many benefits the arts offer our province. Background information regarding the importance of the arts sector can be found under our Advocacy Hub and on the Key Points page of the SAA website.
Saskatchewan Arts Alliance Holiday Office Hours
On behalf of the SAA board of directors and staff, I wish you and yours a peaceful holiday season and a very happy new year. The SAA office will be closed Monday, December 24, 2018 and will reopen on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.
SAA Releases Research Report: the Effects of ArtSmarts on Former Students
SAA commissioned Dianne Warren to write The Lasting Effects of Artist-Teacher Partnerships on Former Students of Broadview School. In 2004, Broadview School began a six-year journey with *ArtsSmarts Saskatchewan, a grant program that provided money for teachers to partner with professional artists in the classroom. This research aimed to discover whether the former students still think about the projects, and if so, how they think their participation might have affected their adult lives. Read it here.

While researching at the SAA, we discover a lot of interesting information and we like to share some of it with you:
- Artspond shared their first in a series of white papers on the evolution of Artse United, a proposed arts management platform cooperative providing robust digital tools for artists and companies in all disciplines. The first white paper features the results of market research and preliminary financial modelling for a Minimum Viable Platform that will be self-sustaining without public funding long-term.
- CBC News article by Madeline Kotzer: New Lens on Life: Residents of Pinehouse in northern Saskatchewan are using photography to heal from trauma.
- The Coalition for the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (CDCE)?
- The CDCE has published an initial reflection on artificial intelligence (AI) in order to identify the challenges and opportunities it raises for the diversity of cultural expressions and to propose ethical principles to guide its development in the cultural field. Read the full report here.
- Last June, the Government of Canada appointed an expert panel to review the Broadcasting Act, the Telecommunications Act and the Radiocommunication Act. The committee of experts (Yale Committee), which is responsible for making recommendations for the revision of laws, consulted many creators and representatives of the cultural industries. The CDCE was heard by the Yale Committee during its visit to Montreal on October 25. On the same day, it published a letter calling for regulations adapted to the challenges of digital technology. Call to Visual Artists and Fine Craftspeople – Award Design
The Saskatchewan Arts Board (SAB) invites all emerging and established visual artists and craftspeople who are residents of Saskatchewan to submit proposals for the award design for the Saskatchewan Arts Awards. The deadline for submissions is February 4, 2019. For more information, visit the SAB website.
Creative Saskatchewan Micro Budget
The Micro-Budget Feature Film Production Grant is now open to applicants. It’s a great opportunity for emerging filmmakers to complete one of their first films. The deadline is Dec 20th at 4pm. Get your applications in now. Details.
Participate in the National Survey of the Canadian Cultural Sector Labour Force
The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) and The Conference Board of Canada (CBoC) are pleased to announce the launch of a national survey of the Canadian cultural sector labour force – the first of its kind since 2010 and the only current national research on the sector’s employers and workers. All cultural sector employers and individuals are invited to answer the survey’s questions.

Cultural Human Resources Council Announces Talent to Lead 3 Mid-Career Leaders

Canada Council for the Arts: 2019 Annual Public Meeting
The Canada Council for the Arts will host its Annual Public Meeting on January 15, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. EST. Chair, Pierre Lassonde, and Director and CEO, Simon Brault, will present highlights from 2018 and the Canada Council’s vision for the coming year. For more information, visit their website.
Twelfth session of the Intergovernmental Committee Launch New Series of Debates
The Coalition for the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (CDCE) participated in the 12th session of the Intergovernmental Committee of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, which met earlier in December at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. A new series of public debates entitled Create|2030 was launched, including a round table on artificial intelligence and its impact on the work of creators.
