Fostering Cultural Success

Canada is brimming with talent! The cinematic gems made in our own backyard, which each year garner over one hundred awards worldwide, clearly demonstrate the quality of our filmmakers and the interest they generate.

First and foremost, Telefilm Canada is a team of some 200 enthusiasts of Canadian cinema. Dedicated to the cultural, commercial and industrial success of Canada’s audiovisual industry, Telefilm, through its various funding and promotion programs, supports dynamic companies and creative talent here at home and around the world.

In an increasingly competitive environment for consumer time and money, Telefilm has made stimulating demand for Canadian screen-based content one of the top priorities of its corporate plan.

Entitled Fostering Cultural Success, this strategic vision is based on the following four pillars:

  1. Maintain and expand our core role as funder;
  2. Develop our role as promoter;
  3. Provide thought leadership by developing and sharing
    industry intelligence; and
  4. Reinforce Telefilm’s organizational excellence.

As such, Telefilm will continue to implement promotional initiatives so that Canadian cinema and talent receive the recognition they deserve on the Canadian and international scene. As an industry partner in numerous festivals and markets, Telefilm showcases creative filmmakers and their products in order to generate sales abroad and foreign financing.

Since 1976, Telefilm has also managed coproduction agreements on behalf of the Canadian government. At present, Canadian producers may create joint works with their counterparts in more than 50 countries. Between 2008 and 2011, some 260 coproductions were produced with total average yearly budgets of nearly $470 million and an average Canadian share of $225 million.

Telefilm also administers the programs of the Canada Media Fund.
