Stop the Cuts: Music on the Block

,
stop funding cuts to Regina Public School Band programs

On May 20th, 2025, the Leader Post published an article about “potential” cutbacks to the Regina Public Schools elementary band program.

Although the Regina Public School Division has not issued an official statement, as of May 23, 2025, band teachers affected by the cuts have reported being informed that they will not be teaching band in the fall and will be reassigned. This effectively eliminates vital music education opportunities for hundreds of students across the city. These cuts continue a pattern of erosion, including a 40% reduction in band teaching staff since 2022. As a result, students will face fewer supports, larger class sizes, and significantly reduced access to arts education.

This is not just about music. It’s about equity, well-being, and giving every child a chance to thrive.

Music education helps students develop cognitive skills, confidence, discipline, and a sense of belonging. It improves academic performance, mental health, and community connection. Early exposure to music leads to lifelong engagement in the arts, thereby strengthening Saskatchewan’s cultural life and creative economy for years to come.

We cannot afford to lose this. Take action here.
