SAA Statement on Regina Public Schools’ June 2 Letter Regarding Elementary Band Program
On June 2, 2025, the Regina Public School Division released a public update regarding the future of the elementary band program. The Saskatchewan Arts Alliance (SAA) acknowledges and appreciates this communication, as it provides clarity for families, educators, and community members.
We are encouraged to learn that band programming for Grades 6 to 8 will continue in the 2025–26 school year and that the existing instructional model, where students are pulled from class for band, will remain in place at participating schools.
At the same time, we remain deeply concerned about the impact of continued staffing reductions on a program that is already under strain. The reduction from 14 to 9.5 full-time equivalent (FTE) teaching positions represents a significant cut in instructional capacity. With fewer teachers serving more students, access to quality music education will become increasingly difficult to sustain, especially for students who rely solely on school-based music programs.
We understand the challenging fiscal realities that school divisions face and the need to respond to the increasing complexity of the classroom. However, we believe music education must be recognized as essential, not optional. Arts programming plays a critical role in supporting student wellness, engagement, and success.
We also note that the timeline of the provincial budget and school division approval process did not allow for meaningful public consultation. This is particularly challenging for all involved, given the high level of community interest and concern.
The Saskatchewan Arts Alliance will continue to advocate for:
- Adequate and stable funding to support specialist music educators;
- Equitable access to music education for all students, regardless of school or socioeconomic background; and
- Public transparency and consultation when foundational arts programs are at risk.
We thank everyone who has written letters, signed petitions, and spoken up in support of music education in our schools. Your voices are being heard, and your continued advocacy is making a difference.
